D’ où êtes-vous ?

When you want to find out where someone is from, you can ask him or her:

D’où êtes-vous ?
(Where are you from?)

Je suis de Chicago.
(I am from Chicago.)

Je suis de Haïti.
(I am from Haiti.)

You can also ask someone to tell you where someone else is from. Here are some possible questions you might ask:

D’où est votre père ?
Mon père est de New York.

Where is your father from?
My father is from New York.

D’où est votre amie ?
Mon amie est de Baton Rouge.

Where is your friend from?

D’où sont les Parisiens ?
Les Parisiens sont de Paris.

Where are Parisians from?

D’où sont les Tahitiens ?
Les Tahitiens sont de Tahiti.

This letter sounds like the “ee” in “tee.”

These vowels sound like the “o” in the word “nose,” but it is actually almost half the sound. You have to try to chop off the last part of the long English “o.”

This vowel does not sound like anything in English! If you round your lips while trying to say “ee,” as in “tee” you will be close.
