FIRST STEPS / Beginner
BONJOUR. COMMENT ALLEZ-VOUS AUJOURD’HUI?
When you want to find out how someone is feeling today, you can ask him or her:
Comment allez-vous aujourd’hui?
(How are you today?)
Je vais bien.
(I’m well.)
Je vais comme ci comme ça.
(I’m so-so/O.K.)
Je vais mal.
(I’m bad, i.e., not feeling well.)
To add some extra emphasis to your answer, you can add the word “très” meaning “very.”
Je vais très bien.
(I’m [feeling] very well.)
Je vais très mal.
(I’m [feeling] very bad.)
You can also ask someone to tell you how another person is doing. Here are some possible questions you might ask:
Comment va votre amie aujourd’hui?
(How is your friend today?)
Mon amie va bien aujourd’hui.
(My friend is fine today.)
Comment va le professeur?
(How is the teacher doing?)
Le professeur va mal.
(The teacher isn’t feeling well.)
Comment vont vos parents?
(How are your parents?)
Mes parents vont comme ci comme ça.
(My parents are so-so/O.K.)
Comment vont les éléphants?
(How are the elephants?)
Les éléphants vont très bien.
(The elephants are very well.)
